Colonia del Sacramento has positioned itself as a metropolitan node of Greater Buenos Aires since its Declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site almost 20 years ago with its important river bridge between both towns and its recent real estate boom.
The implementation of the Terminal is framed within a chaotic and dysfunctional organization of dispersed port buildings. The Terminal building is the end and beginning of the Coastal Railway Park located to the west of it and connects the port with the historic center of Colonia del Sacramento. Towards the East, the project incorporates “The Sculpture Park” under the existing forest mass, a visual screen towards the neighboring industrial warehouses.
The building is above all the result of pragmatic decisions, with its general layout it becomes the main computer of the flows that interact in the program: terrestrial flows, private and collective vehicular flows, and pedestrian flows. At the same time, it acts as the great border between the public access areas and the restricted access areas of the port area.
The complex behaves as an urban connection platform, defined by the Terminal building itself, the Hall as the main internal computer, the existing forest with the sculpture plaza, the vehicular circulations and the parking lot for buses and private vehicles. This set of buildings and beaches operates as an infrastructure of contact with the docks, the river, and with the city as a whole.
Uruguay receives 2 million visitors a year through this terminal, representing 70% of the tourists who enter the country. This growing impact in recent years places it as a “Country Portal”, a reference for Argentine neighbors, for visitors who come to South America, as well as for the local population of Colonia who incorporated it as a new public space. urban services.
